What is recovery like after dental implant surgery?
The recovery process is a crucial part of ensuring that the dental implants are successful and begin to “integrate” with your bone. It is important to allow your mouth to heal so that the implants can restore function to your mouth and function as intended.

First 24 hours

The first 24 hours after the dental implant surgery requires that extra care be given to the healing process. The jaw, gums and teeth will all most likely be sore and tender. It is important that you do your best not to touch or disturb the area where the implants were placed.

You may experience swelling, bleeding and even pain during the first 24 hours after the surgery. Typically your surgeon will prescribe a pain medication that can be used immediately after the surgery to help manage the pain. Using an ice pack or cold compress can help with the swelling and help alleviate pain.

Oral hygiene is extremely important in the healing phase,  if the teeth or gums aren’t kept clean the natural bacteria in our mouths will build up and cause an infection within the wound.

Days 2 and 3

Once the initial 24 hours has passed, you may still experience pain, minor bleeding and even some swelling; inflammation reaches its peak in the first 48-72 hours.  It is important give your body time to heal, and that as the inflammation decreases you will begin to feel better.

We recommend that you continue your pain medications as well as using ice packs or cold compresses to bring down the swelling and pain. We also advised that you begin your oral hygiene routine as soon as possible so that the gums, teeth and mouth stay in good condition while you are healing.

Dental implant surgery provides an array of benefits to people with damaged teeth. As with any surgery there are risks, which both your dentist and surgeon will review with you.
